Two-speed and three-speed gears are now very commonly fitted to cycles.
For the full enjoyment of tandem riding, therefore, a two-speed gear is a necessity, while a three-speed gear is better.
In some two-speed gears the normal is the high speed, in others the low.
This arrangement gives six spindle speeds, and double this number is obtained by using a two-speed countershaft overhead.
