Origin of exarchate

First recorded in 1555–65, exarchate is from the Medieval Latin word exarchātus domain of an exarch. See exarch¹, -ate³

It was also the granary of the Exarchate, owing to the Lombard destruction in Italy, and had a population of some 25,000.
