Technology that allows a computer to recognize different spoken words. The process can be divided into two main parts: the actual phonetic recognition of different words, and the construction of or interpretation of the actual language as spoken, a field called natural language processing. One goal of this technology is to offer an alternative to the keyboard as a means of data input for computers. It is also increasingly used to interact with the public, as seen in the increasing use of this technology to replace humans in many customer service operations.
