The swelling heights were brown and bare, like those of Tweeddale; and there the blackcock may still, I believe, be found.
If such was the policy of Tweeddale, it was, for the moment, eminently successful.
It must be remarked that Tweeddale runs mainly west and east; that the heather-covered hills are all to the west of this place.
The county is known also by the name of Tweeddale; its representation in Parliament is united with that of Selkirk.
It is a patch of bush-veld, as rare on our high-veld as are fragments of the old Ettrick forest in Tweeddale.
