For his services to Prussia he received as a present the forest of Schmalkalden.
Other cities and smaller principalities joined the League of Schmalkalden, the power of which increased from year to year.
In 1532 Bremen joined the league of Schmalkalden, and twice endured a siege by the imperial forces.
The first of these countries even became a member of the Schmalkalden League, in 1538.
In 1550 he was appointed dean of the Collegiatstift in Schmalkalden.
