We present the figure of an allied fly, Merodon Bardus (Fig. 78; a, puparium, natural size).
The mode in which insects make their way out of the puparium differs in different orders.
After some repose, in consequence of very violent efforts, the puparium opens, and it escapes from its prison.
In about as many more days the puparium state would be entered, and in about six days more the fly or imago would appear.
The secretion forming the puparium is mixed with bark-cells of the tree, arranged longitudinally.
