This phlegmasia is distinguished from scarlet fever by its shorter duration and the absence of the efflorescence.
This is most often seen in puerperal women, and is known as phlegmasia alba dolens.
Thrombosis of veins, as in phlegmasia alba dolens, occurs much more rarely than after typhoid fever.
When it occurs there are the same symptoms of phlegmasia alba dolens in the upper extremity as have been mentioned for the lower.
One other had swelled leg, or phlegmasia dolens, and one or two others did not recover as well as usual.
