The most celebrated of the Corinthians was a person, who though a tyrant, was reckoned one of the seven wise men (Periander).
He was a famous musician who resided at the court of Periander, king of Corinth.
As time went on, and Periander came to be old, he found himself no longer equal to the oversight and management of affairs.
After Periander had put to death his wife Melissa, it chanced that on his first affliction a second followed of a different kind.
Periander (d. 587) was succeeded by his nephew Psammetichus, who reigned till 584, when the Corinthians asserted their freedom.
