Orcagna's picture is modelled on the new type fixed by Giotto.
In 1357 Orcagna painted the altar-piece in the same chapel, and of about the same date is the altar-piece now before us.
Orcagna never succeeded in developing the ideas of his master.
But it is just because Orcagna was so firmly and unscrupulously true, that he had the power of being so great when he chose.
But Orcagna's angels float without assistance or effort, by their own inherent lightness, as naturally as we walk.
