Adrien de Valois lays a sound foundation for historical geography by his critical edition of the Notitia Galliarum .
To us the 'Notitia' is only known by the 16th-century copies of a 10th-century MS. which has now disappeared.
Alone amongst the legions it is not mentioned in the 'Notitia' as attached to any province.
Quite in harmony with this general statement are the more precise indications of the 'Notitia.'
Note this use of the word 'Notitia,' as illustrating the title of the celebrated document bearing that name.
