In front the Messines ridge was almost hidden with the smoke of our shells.
Allenby had in reserve four battalions from the Second Corps to the west of Messines, and he now called them into the firing line.
The Germans continued to bring up fresh divisions into the Messines sector, until twenty-three divisions were engaged.
At nightfall the line held about Messines was the same as in the morning.
