K2 is not so massive a mountain as Kinchinjunga and Nanga Parbat.
There is no certainty that as he tops the ridge or turns the corner he will see Kinchinjunga in the full blaze of its glory.
There is about Kinchinjunga the calm and repose of stupendous upward effort successfully achieved.
Clear against the blue sky the shining, ice-clad peaks of Kinchinjunga, a hundred miles away, towered high in air.
And along this central line itself all the lesser heights we see converging on the supreme peak of Kinchinjunga.
