The diocese was created in 1806 and comprises the provinces of Salta and Jujuy.

Gemes, a town of two thousand inhabitants is the junction for Salta and for Jujuy.
Although Salta is on a branch line and Jujuy is on the main one, all through trains go to Salta for it is the largest place.
In the provinces of Tucumn, Salta and Jujuy the main industry is sugar growing and manufacture.
