1570–80; variant (by folk etymology) of earlier curtilace, apparently < dialectal Italian cortelazo, assimilated variant of Italian coltellaccio hunting knife, equivalent to coltell(o) (< Latin; see cultellus) + -accio noun suffix. See cutlass
