1855–60; < Greek chalyb- (stem of chályps) iron, also iron-worker, member of the Chalybes, a tribe of Asia Minor noted for their blacksmiths + -ite¹

Chalybite is usually yellowish-grey or brown in colour; it is translucent and has a vitreous lustre.
