The river escapes from the mountains through the wonderful gorge of Ausable Chasm.
Shortly after nightfall three men crossed the east branch of the Ausable River and entered the little settlement of Keene.
A few miles from the lake is the natural wonder, the Ausable Chasm, which is nearly two miles in length.
On the Ausable river and along the shores of Lake Champlain the destruction of the forest is especially great.
Through these came the little stream going to the Hudson, bubbling along from its source close by a fountain of the Ausable.
